Indian desi breed dogs can be found everywhere in India from smart cities to remote locations. The most common breed you can find is the Pariah dog. But irony is that people do not consider street puppy adoption as their first choice.
In the past, Chatarpati Shivaji Maharaj ji was using the Indian hound in his army; they were known as Maratha hounds.
But now, the trend has changed. All breeders are continuously raising the western and imported breeds and people are most fascinated towards the Labrador. This breed’s dogs are considered as kids and family friendly dogs. Because of this trend, original Indian dog breeds are dying out. People should consider street puppy adoption as a priority to save the desi dog breed.
In 2020, Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji also highlighted the same concern in his monthly ‘Mann ki Baat’ radio show and insisted people to go with Indian dogs if they are planning to have a new dog in their home as they have strong immunity and are gelled with the Indian climate and resistant to disease.
You can also buy a good pedigree desi dog from some of the good breeders. Indian dog breeds are also equally priced as the western breed. Because the cost of raising a dog at a “breeding centre” is almost equal.
List of Indian street dog breeds:

Indian Street Puppy Adoption
How do most people adopt a street dog in India?
Once they get to know if a bitch has given birth to puppies in the local area, they go there and check which one is completely black or white as these colours are their first preference among all and second preference is the healthiest and heaviest puppy. Most people don’t even wait for 6-10 weeks to adopt them because of the scarcity of losing the best puppy.
How Should I Adopt a Desi Breed Street Puppy?
I am sharing the best possible way to open your doors for an Indian Street Puppy:
- Check the mom’s temperament because it’s hard to find the father’s lineage links.
- Get friendly with the mother and give her food after birth so she can recover well and feed well to the puppies. The initial few weeks are crucial for both mom and puppy.
- High Mortality rate: There is a high mortality rate for street puppies because their mothers have to roam on the streets in search of food. During this time, mostly puppies follow the mother and many lose their lives in road accidents.
- Keep Patience: You have to be patient and wait for the right time to separate the puppy from the mother.
- Get it vaccinated: After taking the puppy, visit the vet first to get to know more about the health condition and any existing disease. Street dogs have common diseases like ticks, mange etc. Although, Indian dog breeds are resistant because they have adopted the local nature over the period of time. Western puppies are very less tolerant to Indian nature; they need extensive care in their initial days.
- Welcome Home: Just like you welcome a new born human baby to home, be prepared to welcome your new family member which will stay with you for 15-18 Years and will be most loyal to you and your family.
Set-up a special area for your puppy at home just like you have your own dedicated place for you. Arrange a water bowl, food, shampoo, leash, hair brushes, collar with name printed would be best, toys and a good bedding.
- Training: I would suggest giving them basic dog training like potty training, sitting and stand up command, Identifying strangers, family members, and friends.
If you are raising them for the street, train them not to run behind every car or bike. Identify the strangers and neighbours in your colony and stay alert at night.
- Make a routine: Provide food and water on time, their utensils should be cleaned on a daily basis. You can put them on a leash but make sure it’s not for a long time.
- My personal choice: Once they are grown up, let them stay on the street and make new friends. Let them have their own choice in life, let them make their own friends, let them choose their own partners. All you have to take care of is the regular food, water, vaccines, checkup, and proper training.
Make a dog shelter at the corner of your house which keeps them safe in winter, summer, and rainy weather.
Street Dog Diet:
You might have heard from old people, giving food to a black dog brings fortune to you and your family.
Not everyone can afford the expensive branded food for the street dogs as they are even costlier than human food we buy. Best choice is to give the home food. Here is the list of some food options you can consider:
- Branded dog feed: Western breeds love branded dog food like Royal Canin, Pedigree, etc.. but almost all street dogs prefer to have Indian household fresh food, they generally don’t like the processed food. In India, fresh food is available much easier than the packed food.
- Roti with milk: Street dogs love chapatis soaked in milk. Make sure chapatis are fresh and soft with no Desi ghee because the vet suggests saturated fat is not good for street dogs. But there are some cases like our street dogs prefer to have ghee on it. 😍
- Parle-G Biscuits: Parle-G is India’s most affordable and lovable biscuit brand. We Indian people love this biscuit as a snack and our street dogs love it too but don’t give them access, they are not good for the long run. Instead you can buy some dog specific biscuits and give them as a reward.
- Butchers leftover: Most of the butchers in India leave a good amount of animal parts waste as people don’t consume all the parts of animal and that leftover later is given to street dogs. If you or your friends know such shops, connect with them, take the animal waste from there and feed dogs.
- Rice with Non-Veg or eggs: Many volunteers who feed street dogs prefer to give rice with non-veg or eggs. Eggs are a rich source of protein like humans, animals too need protein for their muscle building. Make sure eggs are well boiled and peeled off.
Most of the indian municipalities have the complaint numbers for street dogs, if they need any help, for neuter and spaying. You can also save your street animals information, if they go missing you can share with the local people.
We at TommySingh.com insist people to adopt Indian dogs so they can have a safe and secure home for them. They are loyal and very protective towards the pet parents, same as the western breed.
